1. “How did you get started?”
Indiegainesville was started when we saw the need to share the extraordinary independent businesses and supportive community in this city. While we didn’t expect to have so much support so quickly, we certainly aren’t complaining!
While the main writer is a Gainesville native, she’s also lived in Ft. Collins, Colorado, Seattle, Washinton, Atlanta, Georgia—and studied abroad. She saw the need to organize independent business owners to have a voice and to promote a city and the treasures that make Gainesville a unique home worthy of celebrating and after years of dreaming, on a whim, started indiegainesville.
2. “Can you offer any suggestion to someone who may want to start something like indiegainesville in another community?”
Jump off the proverbial cliff, and know we’re willing to help however we can! Just talking to the people who run the stores you frequent is a great way to make connections, learn what are issues, and then get a community dialogue going. And SA, you can call us anytime.
3. I probably know too much already. :-p
Yes, FS, you do. And we you.
Did the recyclers come early enough for you this morning?
4. What is your favorite food and where do you enjoy that?
We tend to like fresh produce from the farmers market, and are blissful suckers for Armadillo Chocolate. *hint*
We like to cook, but with work, more than this as activism, family, and so on, it can be hard to spend as much time cooking as we’d like.
Right now, we really want a watermelon and feta salad with basil, sunflower shoots, and a dash of balsamic vinegar. . .
Simple baguette and a chunk of a fresh cheese and fruit is a favorite, too.
5. How does a small business get listed in your directory?
Since the blog is a one-person job at this point, it does—admittingly—take us a bit of time to keep everything up to date. But person who asked this—we want to list and write you up! Please know we haven’t forgotten and are very intrigued by the amazing services you offer.
6. Are you every taking on staff? writers, models, photographers, etc….
Excellent question. We would love to, and hopefully one day, yes. First we need to generate some revenue, though. At this point, indiegainesville is a strict labor of love by some people who know Gainesville is better than chain stores and worth celebrating the uniqueness that makes this feel like home.
7. Have you considered offering advertising to the local businesses that you promote on your site, allowing you to offer more to the community, even if just more of your dedicated time well spent?
Piggy-backing on the previous question, yes! Absolutely YES! We are in the process of working on this now. All that legal mumbo-jumbo, accounting, etc…while working a full time job. But yes, we hope to do this soon!
8.Who aaaare you?
I’ve (yes, lost the “we” there), can be identified here and here.
9. Do you like tacos?
Hm…given the person who asked this, (*eyes MA*) is this a trick question?
Keepin’ it clean, yes, we do enjoy tacos and grew up when Burrito Brothers was a tiny hole-in-a-magnificent wall on 13th near beloved and sorely missed Goering’s Bookstore. We lined up with Dad…usually after spending 2+ hours browsing and buying books. *Nostalgic sigh*
10. Which Moon phase is your favorite?
We’ve never been asked this and admit to not knowing a whole lot about moon phases.
Full moons have very happy memories for us, as do New moons.
(Care to share what this says about personality?!)
11. Do you wear socks with flip flops in the winter?
*thinking* Actually, we may not own flip-flops. Tevas and Birks, yes. And we have worn socks with them in winter on occasion. This last winter was so warm, we definitely can say we didn’t.
Our philosophy on this question: Feet should be happy. Adorn accordingly.
