Celebrating Independent Gainesville
First, we’ll start by sharing a photo a friend of ours took yesterday and shared with us.
Now, to “business”–from our friends (we bolded and italicized why we you, indiegainesville, may be interested in supporting such project–aside from the fact that it’s super fun!)
“Labor Daze Fest: a Rally for Better Jobs for Gainesville” is a day for us, the workers! Our state, local, and national government seems to be more focused on the corporations and millionaires than the people who built this country, the people who make it go – it’s time to change that!
So tell everyone you know: construction workers, nurses, mail carriers, teachers, firefighters, postal workers, service and hospitality industry, police, bus drivers, city workers, retirees, students young and old, to come down to the Bo Diddley Plaza on Sunday, September 2nd from 5-10 for the Second Annual Labor Daze Fest! There will be food, fun, music, and info on what we can do to make it right! And did we mention IT’S FREE!!!
The focus is on the locals who make it all happen: local responsible business, paying a living wage, spending our local budget to benefit US, (not millionaires and multi-national corporations,) putting back into the community through education, and buying local.
We want this to be a yearly event. If we all stand together we can make a difference! (The median income of Gainesville is half that of the rest of the state. One in 3 people here live under the poverty level. There is no excuse for this!) Our tax money needs to be invested in good jobs in our community, not in more minimum-wage, no benefit, starvation-level jobs.
Bands will run from 5-10 and the lineup will be unveiled shortly! Make sure to check Facebook for details. Should be interesting…
So come and eat, listen to music, sign a petition, register to vote, get your face painted, make friends and allies, get information, listen to a speaker, and learn that we are not alone – together we are strong!!!
