Celebrating Independent Gainesville

No room for hate

A few months ago, we went to enjoy Artwalk Gainesville with friends of ours. We were an all-ages group of friends, just looking to do what we do–support local artists and independent businesses.

And so we were startled to be greeted by some protesters on the street, telling some of us we were going to hell (in front of children), and asking others if we had found Jesus.

Um…?

The group in question continues to be go downtown and protest. They were out last night, and though they seem to have learned “you’re going to hell” is not very conducive or productive, they are still preaching hate.

By no means do we deny their First Amendment rights.

But we’re reminding you again: we have that same right, to peacefully assemble and share that indiegainesville doesn’t appreciate the hateful message being spread.

The group that gathers is known as the Warriors of Christ. This name may mean nothing to you, but a quick search reveals that the WoC are linked to the group that tried and burned the Qu’ran. You know, Terry Jones and that whole fiasco?

WoC, as far as we can tell, is virtually the same group, only WoC is lead by Mr. Jones’ son, Luke Jones.

A fantastic group of Gainesville citizens from all walks of life and all different religious beliefs, are reclaiming the city. We do not want Gainesville to be known as a city that hates. That’s just not true.

And so, we request you come downtown next Friday (and possibly the following Fridays) to enjoy the camaraderie of people who know the true meaning of “love thy neighbor”. Peacefully assemble to show that we stand by Dragonfly’s amazing slogan, “Love, not Dove” and join the Jesus’ Love Bomb on Friday nights.

Dress up as a Biblical character, or come as you are.

There is strength in numbers, and there is strength in counter-protesting to demonstrate Gainesville doesn’t have room for such hate.

  1. great post and I try to live by Francis of Assissi’s quote “Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words”. Unfortunately people like Luke and his friends give unbelievers a really bad first impression of an amazing God.
