It’s hardly a secret that water is a crucial issue to residents of indieGainesville and North Central Florida.
From Margaret Ross Tolbert’s breathtaking AQUIFERious to Cynthia Barnett’s eye-opening Blue Revolution, we are passionate about all-things water.
So, we became curious when we were invited to “Wine, Food, Sodas, Slides, T-Shirts, Fun!” (happening today, at beloved Dorn’s.) We did some research and found that this event is a benefit.
And it will benefit the people of San Pedro de Casta, Peru. San Pedro de Casta is a small village. Unfortunately, due to global warming and climate changes, the rainy season in the high altitude of this town is no longer adequate for the people to continue their traditional life. The residents of San Pedro de Casta can no longer rely on the rainy season to produce a enough water for this village.
So what about snow melt? After all, San Pedro de Casta IS at a decent elevation. Well, it turns out that snow melt could help this isolated Peruvian village. It trickles off nearby mountains but is yet to be harnessed or used effectively, so the snow melt flows everywhere. . . except where it is needed. Livestock need it, crops need it…, people need it.
Three women from Gainesville and one from Tampa were inspired by the plight of this ancient village, and are raising money to help San Pedro de Casta be able to harness some of the snow melt to benefit their community. This is a local charity, and one we find quite noble.
So. . . if you like wine (um, yes please!), food, soda, and fun, be sure to stop by Dorn’s this afternoon from 4-6 pm and help water the world and spread the indieGainesville love across the world.
Oh, and if you cannot make it—check out how you can donate online to this wet cause!
