Celebrating Independent Gainesville

Monday: This, that, and the other

Happy Monday!

  • Gainesville and Alachua County residents: Parks and Recreation time!
Weigh in on the Community Interest and Opinion Survey. Now’s your time to give feedback to the Cultural Affairs Board!
  • The tasty scones and croissants from the fine folks of Vine Bread and Pasta are now being served at Flashbacks Cafe.  We see this as another delicious reason to support this local restaurant.
  • We were quoted in the Gainesville Sun.
  • On a related note, please–no more fires, Gainesville restaurants. Enough.
We’ve got a hot local food scene. We get it.
We don’t think Satchel’s wanted to start a trend anyway…
  • Speaking of Satchel’s, don’t miss the Employee Benefit Concert for Satchel’s employees this Wednesday at DoubleDown.
  • Speaking of eating local–do locavores create jobs?
  • Thanks Chris of Gainesville Compost for drawing our attention to this interesting article: Don’t Mock the Artisanal-Pickle Makers
“It’s tempting to look at craft businesses as simply a rejection of modern industrial capitalism. But the craft approach is actually something new — a happy refinement of the excesses of our industrial era plus a return to the vision laid out by capitalism’s godfather, Adam Smith. One of his central insights in “The Wealth of Nations” is the importance of specialization. When everyone does everything — sews their own clothes, harvests their own crops, bakes their own bread — each act becomes inefficient, because generalists are rarely as quick or able as specialists.”
